           “Iknowwhohastakenit,”repeatedRostóvinanunsteadyvoice,andwenttothedoor.

           “AndItellyou,don’tyoudahetodoit!”shoutedDenísov,rushingatthecadettorestrainhim.

           ButRostóvpulledawayhisarmand,withasmuchangerasthoughDenísovwerehisworstenemy,firmlyfixedhiseyesdirectlyonhisface.

           “Doyouunderstandwhatyou’resaying?”hesaidinatremblingvoice.“Therewasnooneelseintheroomexceptmyself.Sothatifitisnotso,then...”

           Hecouldnotfinish,andranoutoftheroom.

           “Ah,maythedeviltakeyouandevewybody,”werethelastwordsRostóvheard.

           RostóvwenttoTelyánin’squarters.

           “Themasterisnotin,he’sgonetoheadquarters,”saidTelyánin’sorderly.“Hassomethinghappened?”headded,surprisedatthecadet’stroubledface.

           “No,nothing.”

           “You’veonlyjustmissedhim,”saidtheorderly.

           TheheadquartersweresituatedtwomilesawayfromSalzeneck,andRostóv,withoutreturninghome,tookahorseandrodethere.Therewasaninninthevillagewhichtheofficersfrequented.RostóvrodeuptoitandsawTelyánin’shorseattheporch.

           Inthesecondroomoftheinnthelieutenantwassittingoveradishofsausagesandabottleofwine.

           “Ah,you’vecomeheretoo,youngman!”hesaid,smilingandraisinghiseyebrows.

           “Yes,”saidRostóvasifitcosthimagreatdealtouttertheword;andhesatdownatthenearesttable.

           Bothweresilent.ThereweretwoGermansandaRussianofficerintheroom.
