           Rostóvthrustthepurseunderthepillowandshookthedamplittlehandwhichwasofferedhim.TelyáninforsomereasonhadbeentransferredfromtheGuardsjustbeforethiscampaign.Hebehavedverywellintheregimentbutwasnotliked;Rostóvespeciallydetestedhimandwasunabletoovercomeorconcealhisgroundlessantipathytotheman.

           “Well,youngcavalryman,howismyRookbehaving?”heasked.(RookwasayounghorseTelyáninhadsoldtoRostóv.)

           Thelieutenantneverlookedthemanhewasspeakingtostraightintheface;hiseyescontinuallywanderedfromoneobjecttoanother.

           “Isawyouridingthismorning...”headded.

           “Oh,he’sallright,agoodhorse,”answeredRostóv,thoughthehorseforwhichhehadpaidsevenhundredrubbleswasnotworthhalfthatsum.“He’sbeguntogoalittlelameontheleftforeleg,”headded.

           “Thehoof’scracked!That’snothing.I’llteachyouwhattodoandshowyouwhatkindofrivettouse.”

           “Yes,pleasedo,”saidRostóv.

           “I’llshowyou,I’llshowyou!It’snotasecret.Andit’sahorseyou’llthankmefor.”

           “ThenI’llhaveitbroughtround,”saidRostóvwishingtoavoidTelyánin,andhewentouttogivetheorder.

           InthepassageDenísov,withapipe,wassquattingonthethresholdfacingthequartermasterwhowasreportingtohim.OnseeingRostóv,DenísovscreweduphisfaceandpointingoverhisshoulderwithhisthumbtotheroomwhereTelyáninwassitting,hefrownedandgaveashudderofdisgust.

           “Ugh!Idon’tlikethatfellow,”hesaid,regardlessofthequartermaster’spresence.
