           Andthereforetoexplainhowfromtheserelationsoftheirsthesubmissionofmillionsofpeopleresulted—thatis,howcomponentforcesequaltooneAgavearesultantequaltoathousandtimesA—thehistorianisagainobligedtofallbackonpower—theforcehehaddenied—andtorecognizeitastheresultantoftheforces,thatis,hehastoadmitanunexplainedforceactingontheresultant.Andthatisjustwhattheuniversalhistoriansdo,andconsequentlytheynotonlycontradictthespecialisthistoriansbutcontradictthemselves.

           Peasantshavingnoclearideaofthecauseofrain,say,accordingtowhethertheywantrainorfineweather:“Thewindhasblownthecloudsaway,”or,“Thewindhasbroughtuptheclouds.”Andinthesamewaytheuniversalhistorianssometimes,whenitpleasesthemandfitsinwiththeirtheory,saythatpoweristheresultofevents,andsometimes,whentheywanttoprovesomethingelse,saythatpowerproducesevents.

           Athirdclassofhistorians—theso-calledhistoriansofculture—followingthepathlaiddownbytheuniversalhistorianswhosometimesacceptwritersandladiesasforcesproducingevents—againtakethatforcetobesomethingquitedifferent.Theyseeitinwhatiscalledculture—inmentalactivity.
