           ButNatásha,knowingallherhusband’swaysandideas,sawthathehadlongbeenwishingbuthadbeenunabletodiverttheconversationtoanotherchannelandexpresshisowndeeplyfeltideaforthesakeofwhichhehadgonetoPetersburgtoconsultwithhisnewfriendPrinceTheodore,andshehelpedhimbyaskinghowhisaffairswithPrinceTheodorehadgone.

           “Whatwasitabout?”askedNicholas.

           “Alwaysthesamething,”saidPierre,lookingroundathislisteners.“Everybodyseesthatthingsaregoingsobadlythattheycannotbeallowedtogoonsoandthatitisthedutyofalldecentmentocounteractitasfarastheycan.”

           “Whatcandecentmendo?”Nicholasinquired,frowningslightly.“Whatcanbedone?”

           “Why,this...”

           “Comeintomystudy,”saidNicholas.

           Natásha,whohadlongexpectedtobefetchedtonurseherbaby,nowheardthenursecallingherandwenttothenursery.CountessMaryfollowedher.ThemenwentintothestudyandlittleNicholasBolkónskifollowedthemunnoticedbyhisuncleandsatdownatthewritingtableinashadycornerbythewindow.

           “Well,whatwouldyoudo?”askedDenísov.

           “Alwayssomefantasticschemes,”saidNicholas.

           “Whythis,”beganPierre,notsittingdownbutpacingtheroom,sometimesstoppingshort,gesticulating,andlisping:“thepositioninPetersburgisthis:theEmperordoesnotlookintoanything.Hehasabandonedhimselfaltogethertothismysticism”(Pierrecouldnottoleratemysticisminanyonenow).
