           CountessMarywhohadbroughthimuphaddoneherutmosttomakehimloveherhusbandasshelovedhim,andlittleNicholasdidlovehisuncle,butlovedhimwithjustashadeofcontempt.Pierre,however,headored.HedidnotwanttobeanhussaroraKnightofSt.GeorgelikehisuncleNicholas;hewantedtobelearned,wise,andkindlikePierre.InPierre’spresencehisfacealwaysshonewithpleasureandheflushedandwasbreathlesswhenPierrespoketohim.Hedidnotmissasinglewordheuttered,andwouldafterwards,withDessallesorbyhimself,recallandreconsiderthemeaningofeverythingPierrehadsaid.Pierre’spastlifeandhisunhappinesspriorto1812(ofwhichyoungNicholashadformedavaguepoeticpicturefromsomewordshehadoverheard),hisadventuresinMoscow,hiscaptivity,PlatónKaratáev(ofwhomhehadheardfromPierre),hisloveforNatásha(ofwhomtheladwasalsoparticularlyfond),andespeciallyPierre’sfriendshipwiththefatherwhomNicholascouldnotremember—allthismadePierreinhiseyesaheroandasaint.

           FrombrokenremarksaboutNatáshaandhisfather,fromtheemotionwithwhichPierrespokeofthatdeadfather,andfromthecareful,reverenttendernesswithwhichNatáshaspokeofhim,theboy,whowasonlyjustbeginningtoguesswhatloveis,derivedthenotionthathisfatherhadlovedNatáshaandwhendyinghadlefthertohisfriend.Butthefatherwhomtheboydidnotrememberappearedtohimadivinitywhocouldnotbepictured,andofwhomheneverthoughtwithoutaswellingheartandtearsofsadnessandrapture.
