           JustasPrinceAndrewmetJustasPrinceAndrewmetNesvítskiandZherkóv,therecametowardthemfromtheotherendofthecorridor,Strauch,anAustriangeneralwhowasonKutúzov’sstaffinchargeoftheprovisioningoftheRussianarmy,andthememberoftheHofkriegsrathwhohadarrivedthepreviousevening.Therewasroomenoughinthewidecorridorforthegeneralstopassthethreeofficersquiteeasily,butZherkóv,pushingNesvítskiasidewithhisarm,saidinabreathlessvoice,

           “They’recoming!...they’recoming!...Standaside,makeway,pleasemakeway!”

           Thegeneralswerepassingby,lookingasiftheywishedtoavoidembarrassingattentions.OnthefaceofthewagZherkóvtheresuddenlyappearedastupidsmileofgleewhichheseemedunabletosuppress.

           “Yourexcellency,”saidheinGerman,steppingforwardandaddressingtheAustriangeneral,“Ihavethehonortocongratulateyou.”

           Hebowedhisheadandscrapedfirstwithonefootandthenwiththeother,awkwardly,likeachildatadancinglesson.

           ThememberoftheHofkriegsrathlookedathimseverelybut,seeingtheseriousnessofhisstupidsmile,couldnotbutgivehimamoment’sattention.Hescreweduphiseyesshowingthathewaslistening.

           “Ihavethehonortocongratulateyou.GeneralMackhasarrived,quitewell,onlyalittlebruisedjusthere,”headded,pointingwithabeamingsmiletohishead.

           Thegeneralfrowned,turnedaway,andwenton.

           “Gott,wienaiv!”*saidheangrily,afterhehadgoneafewsteps.
