           “Yes,yes.”AndNicholas,takinghislittledaughterinhisstronghand,liftedherhigh,placedheronhisshoulder,heldherbythelegs,andpacedtheroomwithher.Therewasanexpressionofcarefreehappinessonthefacesofbothfatheranddaughter.

           “Butyouknowyoumaybeunfair.Youaretoofondofthisone,”hiswifewhisperedinFrench.

           “Yes,butwhatamItodo?...Itrynottoshow...”

           Atthatmomenttheyheardthesoundofthedoorpulleyandfootstepsinthehallandanteroom,asifsomeonehadarrived.
