           Thecabmenhemetandtheirpassengers,thecarpenterscuttingthetimberfornewhouseswithaxes,thewomenhawkers,andtheshopkeepers,alllookedathimwithcheerfulbeamingeyesthatseemedtosay:“Ah,thereheis!Let’sseewhatwillcomeofit!”

           AttheentrancetoPrincessMary’shousePierrefeltdoubtfulwhetherhehadreallybeentherethenightbeforeandreallyseenNatáshaandtalkedtoher.“PerhapsIimaginedit;perhapsIshallgoinandfindnoonethere.”Buthehadhardlyenteredtheroombeforehefeltherpresencewithhiswholebeingbythelossofhissenseoffreedom.Shewasinthesameblackdresswithsoftfoldsandherhairwasdonethesamewayasthedaybefore,yetshewasquitedifferent.Hadshebeenlikethiswhenheenteredthedaybeforehecouldnotforamomenthavefailedtorecognizeher.

           Nextdayhecameearly,dined,andstayedthewholeevening.ThoughPrincessMaryandNatáshawereevidentlygladtoseetheirvisitorandthoughallPierre’sinterestwasnowcenteredinthathouse,bytheeveningtheyhadtalkedovereverythingandtheconversationpassedfromonetrivialtopictoanotherandrepeatedlybrokeoff.HestayedsolongthatPrincessMaryandNatáshaexchangedglances,evidentlywonderingwhenhewouldgo.
