           Natásha,leaningonherelbow,theexpressionofherfaceconstantlychangingwiththenarrative,watchedPierrewithanattentionthatneverwandered—evidentlyherselfexperiencingallthathedescribed.Notonlyherlook,butherexclamationsandthebriefquestionssheput,showedPierrethatsheunderstoodjustwhathewishedtoconvey.Itwasclearthatsheunderstoodnotonlywhathesaidbutalsowhathewishedto,butcouldnot,expressinwords.TheaccountPierregaveoftheincidentwiththechildandthewomanforprotectingwhomhewasarrestedwasthis:“Itwasanawfulsight—childrenabandoned,someintheflames...Onewassnatchedoutbeforemyeyes...andtherewerewomenwhohadtheirthingssnatchedoffandtheirearringstornout...”heflushedandgrewconfused.“Thenapatrolarrivedandallthemen—allthosewhowerenotlooting,thatis—werearrested,andIamongthem.”

           “Iamsureyou’renottellinguseverything;Iamsureyoudidsomething...”saidNatáshaandpausingadded,“somethingfine?”

           PierrebegantotellaboutKaratáev,butpaused.Bythistimehehadrisenfromthetableandwaspacingtheroom,Natáshafollowinghimwithhereyes.Thenheadded:

           “No,youcan’tunderstandwhatIlearnedfromthatilliterateman—thatsimplefellow.”

           “Yes,yes,goon!”saidNatásha.“Whereishe?”

           “Theykilledhimalmostbeforemyeyes.
