           Andfromthedifferentrankssometwentymenrantothefront.Adrummer,theirleader,turnedroundfacingthesingers,andflourishinghisarm,beganalong-drawn-outsoldiers’song,commencingwiththewords:“Morningdawned,thesunwasrising,”andconcluding:“Onthen,brothers,ontoglory,ledbyFatherKámenski.”ThissonghadbeencomposedintheTurkishcampaignandnowbeingsunginAustria,theonlychangebeingthatthewords“FatherKámenski”werereplacedby“FatherKutúzov.”

           Havingjerkedouttheselastwordsassoldiersdoandwavedhisarmsasifflingingsomethingtotheground,thedrummer—alean,handsomesoldierofforty—lookedsternlyatthesingersandscreweduphiseyes.Thenhavingsatisfiedhimselfthatalleyeswerefixedonhim,heraisedbotharmsasifcarefullyliftingsomeinvisiblebutpreciousobjectabovehisheadand,holdingitthereforsomeseconds,suddenlyflungitdownandbegan:

           “Oh,mybower,oh,mybower...!”

           “Oh,mybowernew...
