           Andthelatter—unconsciousthathewasbeingreflectedinthehussarofficerasinalookingglass—started,movedforward,andanswered:“Highlysatisfied,yourexcellency!”

           “Weallhaveourweaknesses,”saidKutúzovsmilingandwalkingawayfromhim.“HeusedtohaveapredilectionforBacchus.”

           Theregimentalcommanderwasafraidhemightbeblamedforthisanddidnotanswer.Thehussaratthatmomentnoticedthefaceofthered-nosedcaptainandhisdrawn-instomach,andmimickedhisexpressionandposewithsuchexactitudethatNesvítskicouldnothelplaughing.Kutúzovturnedround.Theofficerevidentlyhadcompletecontrolofhisface,andwhileKutúzovwasturningmanagedtomakeagrimaceandthenassumeamostserious,deferential,andinnocentexpression.

           Thethirdcompanywasthelast,andKutúzovpondered,apparentlytryingtorecollectsomething.PrinceAndrewsteppedforwardfromamongthesuiteandsaidinFrench:

           “YoutoldmetoremindyouoftheofficerDólokhov,reducedtotheranksinthisregiment.”

           “WhereisDólokhov?”askedKutúzov.

           Dólokhov,whohadalreadychangedintoasoldier’sgraygreatcoat,didnotwaittobecalled.Theshapelyfigureofthefair-hairedsoldier,withhisclearblueeyes,steppedforwardfromtheranks,wentuptothecommanderinchief,andpresentedarms.

           “Haveyouacomplainttomake?”Kutúzovaskedwithaslightfrown.

           “ThisisDólokhov,”saidPrinceAndrew.

           “Ah!”saidKutúzov.“Ihopethiswillbealessontoyou.Doyourduty.TheEmperorisgracious,andIshan’tforgetyouifyoudeservewell.
