           “Isthatyou,Clément?”heasked.“Wherethedevil...?”But,noticinghismistake,hebrokeoffshortand,withafrown,greetedDólokhovasastranger,askingwhathecoulddoforhim.

           Dólokhovsaidthatheandhiscompanionweretryingtoovertaketheirregiment,andaddressingthecompanyingeneralaskedwhethertheyknewanythingofthe6thRegiment.Noneofthemknewanything,andPétyathoughttheofficerswerebeginningtolookathimandDólokhovwithhostilityandsuspicion.Forsomesecondsallweresilent.

           “Ifyouwerecountingontheeveningsoup,youhavecometoolate,”saidavoicefrombehindthefirewitharepressedlaugh.

           Dólokhovrepliedthattheywerenothungryandmustpushonfartherthatnight.

           Hehandedthehorsesovertothesoldierwhowasstirringthepotandsquatteddownonhisheelsbythefirebesidetheofficerwiththelongneck.ThatofficerdidnottakehiseyesfromDólokhovandagainaskedtowhatregimenthebelonged.Dólokhov,asifhehadnotheardthequestion,didnotreply,butlightingashortFrenchpipewhichhetookfromhispocketbeganaskingtheofficerinhowfartheroadbeforethemwassafefromCossacks.

           “Thosebrigandsareeverywhere,”repliedanofficerfrombehindthefire.

           DólokhovremarkedthattheCossackswereadangeronlytostragglerssuchashiscompanionandhimself,“butprobablytheywouldnotdaretoattacklargedetachments?”headdedinquiringly.Noonereplied.

           “Well,nowhe’llcomeaway,”Pétyathoughteverymomentashestoodbythecampfirelisteningtothetalk.
