           “Therenow!Didn’tItellyou,MichaelMítrich,thatifitwassaid‘onthemarch’itmeantingreatcoats?”saidhereproachfullytothebattalioncommander.“Oh,myGod!”headded,steppingresolutelyforward.“Companycommanders!”heshoutedinavoiceaccustomedtocommand.“Sergeantsmajor!...Howsoonwillhebehere?”heaskedtheaide-de-campwitharespectfulpolitenessevidentlyrelatingtothepersonagehewasreferringto.

           “Inanhour’stime,Ishouldsay.”

           “Shallwehavetimetochangeclothes?”

           “Idon’tknow,General....”

           Theregimentalcommander,goinguptothelinehimself,orderedthesoldierstochangeintotheirgreatcoats.Thecompanycommandersranofftotheircompanies,thesergeantsmajorbeganbustling(thegreatcoatswerenotinverygoodcondition),andinstantlythesquaresthathaduptothenbeeninregularorderandsilentbegantoswayandstretchandhumwithvoices.Onallsidessoldierswererunningtoandfro,throwinguptheirknapsackswithajerkoftheirshouldersandpullingthestrapsovertheirheads,unstrappingtheirovercoatsanddrawingthesleevesonwithupraisedarms.
