           Notfarfromhimwalkedafatmajorwithasallow,bloated,angryface,whowaswearingaKazándressinggowntiedroundwithatowel,andwhoevidentlyenjoyedtherespectofhisfellowprisoners.Hekeptonehand,inwhichheclaspedhistobaccopouch,insidethebosomofhisdressinggownandheldthestemofhispipefirmlywiththeother.Pantingandpuffing,themajorgrumbledandgrowledateverybodybecausehethoughthewasbeingpushedandthattheywereallhurryingwhentheyhadnowheretohurrytoandwereallsurprisedatsomethingwhentherewasnothingtobesurprisedat.Another,athinlittleofficer,wasspeakingtoeveryone,conjecturingwheretheywerenowbeingtakenandhowfartheywouldgetthatday.AnofficialinfeltbootsandwearingacommissariatuniformranroundfromsidetosideandgazedattheruinsofMoscow,loudlyannouncinghisobservationsastowhathadbeenburneddownandwhatthisorthatpartofthecitywasthattheycouldsee.Athirdofficer,whobyhisaccentwasaPole,disputedwiththecommissariatofficer,arguingthathewasmistakeninhisidentificationofthedifferentwardsofMoscow.

           “Whatareyoudisputingabout?”saidthemajorangrily.“WhatdoesitmatterwhetheritisSt.NicholasorSt.Blasius?Youseeit’sburneddown,andthere’sanendofit....Whatareyoupushingfor?Isn’ttheroadwideenough?”saidhe,turningtoamanbehindhimwhowasnotpushinghimatall.
