           Whenonthefirstdayhegotupearly,wentoutoftheshedatdawn,andsawthecupolasandcrossesoftheNewConventoftheVirginstilldarkatfirst,thehoarfrostonthedustygrass,theSparrowHills,andthewoodedbanksabovethewindingrivervanishinginthepurpledistance,whenhefeltthecontactofthefreshairandheardthenoiseofthecrowsflyingfromMoscowacrossthefield,andwhenafterwardslightgleamedfromtheeastandthesun’srimappearedsolemnlyfrombehindacloud,andthecupolasandcrosses,thehoarfrost,thedistanceandtheriver,allbegantosparkleinthegladlight—Pierrefeltanewjoyandstrengthinlifesuchashehadneverbeforeknown.Andthisnotonlystayedwithhimduringthewholeofhisimprisonment,butevengrewinstrengthasthehardshipsofhispositionincreased.
