           Hisfineeyeslitupwithathoughtful,kindly,andunaccustomedbrightness,buthewaslookingnotathissisterbutoverherheadtowardthedarknessoftheopendoorway.

           “Letusgotoher,Imustsaygood-by.Or—goandwakeandI’llcomeinamoment.Petrúshka!”hecalledtohisvalet:“Comehere,taketheseaway.Putthisontheseatandthistotheright.”

           PrincessMaryroseandmovedtothedoor,thenstoppedandsaid:“Andrew,ifyouhadfaithyouwouldhaveturnedtoGodandaskedHimtogiveyoutheloveyoudonotfeel,andyourprayerwouldhavebeenanswered.”

           “Well,maybe!”saidPrinceAndrew.“Go,Másha;I’llcomeimmediately.”

           Onthewaytohissister’sroom,inthepassagewhichconnectedonewingwiththeother,PrinceAndrewmetMademoiselleBouriennesmilingsweetly.Itwasthethirdtimethatdaythat,withanecstaticandartlesssmile,shehadmethiminsecludedpassages.

           “Oh!Ithoughtyouwereinyourroom,”shesaid,forsomereasonblushinganddroppinghereyes.

           PrinceAndrewlookedsternlyatherandanexpressionofangersuddenlycameoverhisface.Hesaidnothingtoherbutlookedatherforeheadandhair,withoutlookingathereyes,withsuchcontemptthattheFrenchwomanblushedandwentawaywithoutaword.Whenhereachedhissister’sroomhiswifewasalreadyawakeandhermerryvoice,hurryingonewordafteranother,camethroughtheopendoor.ShewasspeakingasusualinFrench,andasifafterlongself-restraintshewishedtomakeupforlosttime.
