           DuringthemonththattheFrenchtroopswerepillaginginMoscowandtheRussiantroopswerequietlyencampedatTarútino,achangehadtakenplaceintherelativestrengthofthetwoarmies—bothinspiritandinnumber—asaresultofwhichthesuperiorityhadpassedtotheRussianside.ThoughtheconditionandnumbersoftheFrencharmywereunknowntotheRussians,assoonasthatchangeoccurredtheneedofattackingatonceshoweditselfbycountlesssigns.Thesesignswere:Lauriston’smission;theabundanceofprovisionsatTarútino;thereportscominginfromallsidesoftheinactivityanddisorderoftheFrench;theflowofrecruitstoourregiments;thefineweather;thelongresttheRussiansoldiershadenjoyed,andtheimpatiencetodowhattheyhadbeenassembledfor,whichusuallyshowsitselfinanarmythathasbeenresting;curiosityastowhattheFrencharmy,solonglostsightof,wasdoing;theboldnesswithwhichouroutpostsnowscoutedcloseuptotheFrenchstationedatTarútino;thenewsofeasysuccessesgainedbypeasantsandguerrillatroopsovertheFrench,theenvyarousedbythis;thedesireforrevengethatlayintheheartofeveryRussianaslongastheFrenchwereinMoscow,and(aboveall)adimconsciousnessineverysoldier’smindthattherelativestrengthofthearmieshadchangedandthattheadvantagewasnowonourside.Therewasasubstantialchangeintherelativestrength,andanadvancehadbecomeinevitable
