           “Onemoment,Princess,onemoment,mydear!Isthishisson?”saidthecountess,turningtolittleNicholaswhowascominginwithDessalles.“Therewillberoomforeverybody,thisisabighouse.Oh,whatalovelyboy!”

           ThecountesstookPrincessMaryintothedrawingroom,whereSónyawastalkingtoMademoiselleBourienne.Thecountesscaressedtheboy,andtheoldcountcameinandwelcomedtheprincess.HehadchangedverymuchsincePrincessMaryhadlastseenhim.Thenhehadbeenabrisk,cheerful,self-assuredoldman;nowheseemedapitiful,bewilderedperson.WhiletalkingtoPrincessMaryhecontinuallylookedroundasifaskingeveryonewhetherhewasdoingtherightthing.AfterthedestructionofMoscowandofhisproperty,thrownoutofhisaccustomedgrooveheseemedtohavelostthesenseofhisownsignificanceandtofeelthattherewasnolongeraplaceforhiminlife.

           “Thisismyniece,”saidthecount,introducingSónya—“Youdon’tknowher,Princess?”

           PrincessMaryturnedtoSónyaand,tryingtostiflethehostilefeelingthataroseinhertowardthegirl,shekissedher.
