           OngrowingusedtothedarknessPierresawthatthemanwastakingoffhislegbands,andthewayhediditarousedPierre’sinterest.

           Havingunwoundthestringthattiedthebandononeleg,hecarefullycoileditupandimmediatelysettoworkontheotherleg,glancingupatPierre.Whileonehandhungupthefirststringtheotherwasalreadyunwindingthebandonthesecondleg.Inthisway,havingcarefullyremovedthelegbandsbydeftcircularmotionsofhisarmfollowingoneanotheruninterruptedly,themanhungthelegbandsuponsomepegsfixedabovehishead.Thenhetookoutaknife,cutsomething,closedtheknife,placeditundertheheadofhisbed,and,seatinghimselfcomfortably,claspedhisarmsroundhisliftedkneesandfixedhiseyesonPierre.Thelatterwasconsciousofsomethingpleasant,comforting,andwell-roundedinthesedeftmovements,intheman’swell-orderedarrangementsinhiscorner,andeveninhisverysmell,andhelookedatthemanwithouttakinghiseyesfromhim.

           “You’veseenalotoftrouble,sir,eh?”thelittlemansuddenlysaid.

           AndtherewassomuchkindlinessandsimplicityinhissingsongvoicethatPierretriedtoreply,buthisjawtrembledandhefelttearsrisingtohiseyes.Thelittlefellow,givingPierrenotimetobetrayhisconfusion,instantlycontinuedinthesamepleasanttones:

           “Eh,lad,don’tfret!”saidhe,inthetendersingsongcaressingvoiceoldRussianpeasantwomenemploy.“Don’tfret,friend—‘sufferanhour,liveforanage!’that’showitis,mydearfellow.Andherewelive,thankheaven,withoutoffense.
