           Butbeforehehaddecidedwhattodo,Davoutraisedhishead,pushedhisspectaclesbackonhisforehead,screweduphiseyes,andlookedintentlyathim.

           “Iknowthatman,”hesaidinacold,measuredtone,evidentlycalculatedtofrightenPierre.

           ThechillthathadbeenrunningdownPierre’sbacknowseizedhisheadasinavise.

           “Youcannotknowme,General,Ihaveneverseenyou...”

           “HeisaRussianspy,”Davoutinterrupted,addressinganothergeneralwhowaspresent,butwhomPierrehadnotnoticed.

           Davoutturnedaway.WithanunexpectedreverberationinhisvoicePierrerapidlybegan:

           “No,monseigneur,”hesaid,suddenlyrememberingthatDavoutwasaduke.“No,monseigneur,youcannothaveknownme.IamamilitiaofficerandhavenotquittedMoscow.”

           “Yourname?”askedDavout.

           “Bezúkhov.”

           “WhatproofhaveIthatyouarenotlying?”

           “Monseigneur!”exclaimedPierre,notinanoffendedbutinapleadingvoice.

           Davoutlookedupandgazedintentlyathim.Forsomesecondstheylookedatoneanother,andthatlooksavedPierre.Apartfromconditionsofwarandlaw,thatlookestablishedhumanrelationsbetweenthetwomen.Atthatmomentanimmensenumberofthingspasseddimlythroughboththeirminds,andtheyrealizedthattheywerebothchildrenofhumanityandwerebrothers.

           Atthefirstglance,whenDavouthadonlyraisedhisheadfromthepaperswherehumanaffairsandliveswereindicatedbynumbers,Pierrewasmerelyacircumstance,andDavoutcouldhaveshothimwithoutburdeninghisconsciencewithanevildeed,butnowhesawinhimahumanbeing.
