           HavingutteredthesewordsinanagitatedvoicetheEmperorsuddenlyturnedawayasiftohidefromMichaudthetearsthatrosetohiseyes,andwenttothefurtherendofhisstudy.Havingstoodthereafewmoments,hestrodebacktoMichaudandpressedhisarmbelowtheelbowwithavigorousmovement.TheEmperor’smildandhandsomefacewasflushedandhiseyesgleamedwithresolutionandanger.

           “ColonelMichaud,donotforgetwhatIsaytoyouhere,perhapswemayrecallitwithpleasuresomeday...NapoleonorI,”saidtheEmperor,touchinghisbreast.“Wecannolongerbothreigntogether.Ihavelearnedtoknowhim,andhewillnotdeceivemeanymore....”

           AndtheEmperorpaused,withafrown.

           WhenheheardthesewordsandsawtheexpressionoffirmresolutionintheEmperor’seyes,Michaud—quoiqueétranger,russedecœuretd’âme,—atthatsolemnmomentfelthimselfenrapturedbyallthathehadheard(asheusedafterwardstosay),andgaveexpressiontohisownfeelingsandthoseoftheRussianpeoplewhoserepresentativeheconsideredhimselftobe,inthefollowingwords:

           “Sire!”saidhe,“YourMajestyisatthismomentsigningthegloryofthenationandthesalvationofEurope!”

           WithaninclinationoftheheadtheEmperordismissedhim.
