           Andhavingthusdemolishedtheyoungman,AnnaPávlovnaturnedtoanothergroupwhereBilíbinwastalkingabouttheAustrians:havingwrinkleduphisfacehewasevidentlypreparingtosmoothitoutagainandutteroneofhismots.

           “What?What’sthat?”askedAnnaPávlovna,securingsilenceforthemot,whichshehadheardbefore.

           AndBilíbinrepeatedtheactualwordsofthediplomaticdispatch,whichhehadhimselfcomposed.

           “TheEmperorreturnstheseAustrianbanners,”saidBilíbin,“friendlybannersgoneastrayandfoundonawrongpath,”andhisbrowbecamesmoothagain.

           “Charming,charming!”observedPrinceVasíli.

           “ThepathtoWarsaw,perhaps,”PrinceHippolyteremarkedloudlyandunexpectedly.Everybodylookedathim,understandingwhathemeant.PrinceHippolytehimselfglancedaroundwithamusedsurprise.Heknewnomorethantheotherswhathiswordsmeant.Duringhisdiplomaticcareerhehadmorethanoncenoticedthatsuchutteranceswerereceivedasverywitty,andateveryopportunityheutteredinthatwaythefirstwordsthatenteredhishead.
