           Pierre,accompaniedbythemaid,wasadvancingtothespotwherethegeneralstood,buttheFrenchsoldiersstoppedhim.

           “Onnepassepas!”*criedavoice.

           *“Youcan’tpass!”

           “Thisway,uncle,”criedthegirl.“We’llpassthroughthesidestreet,bytheNikúlins’!”

           Pierreturnedback,givingaspringnowandthentokeepupwithher.Sheranacrossthestreet,turneddownasidestreettotheleft,and,passingthreehouses,turnedintoayardontheright.

           “It’shere,closeby,”saidsheand,runningacrosstheyard,openedagateinawoodenfenceand,stopping,pointedouttohimasmallwoodenwingofthehouse,whichwasburningbrightlyandfiercely.Oneofitssideshadfallenin,anotherwasonfire,andbrightflamesissuedfromtheopeningsofthewindowsandfromundertheroof.

           AsPierrepassedthroughthefencegate,hewasenvelopedbyhotairandinvoluntarilystopped.

           “Whichisit?Whichisyourhouse?”heasked.

           “Ooh!”wailedthegirl,pointingtothewing.“That’sit,thatwasourlodging.You’veburnedtodeath,ourtreasure,Katie,mypreciouslittlemissy!Ooh!”lamentedAníska,whoatthesightofthefirefeltthatshetoomustgiveexpressiontoherfeelings.

           Pierrerushedtothewing,buttheheatwassogreatthatheinvoluntarilypassedroundinacurveandcameuponthelargehousethatwasasyetburningonlyatoneend,justbelowtheroof,andaroundwhichswarmedacrowdofFrenchmen.
