           Twogirlsofabouttenandtwelve,dressedindirtyshortfrocksandcloaks,werestaringattheirmotherwithalookofstupefactionontheirpalefrightenedfaces.Theyoungestchild,aboyofaboutseven,whoworeanovercoatandanimmensecapevidentlynothisown,wascryinginhisoldnurse’sarms.Adirty,barefootedmaidwassittingonatrunk,and,havingundoneherpale-coloredplait,waspullingitstraightandsniffingathersingedhair.Thewoman’shusband,ashort,round-shoulderedmanintheundressuniformofacivilianofficial,withsausage-shapedwhiskersandshowingunderhissquare-setcapthehairsmoothlybrushedforwardoverhistemples,withexpressionlessfacewasmovingthetrunks,whichwereplacedoneonanother,andwasdraggingsomegarmentsfromunderthem.

           AssoonasshesawPierre,thewomanalmostthrewherselfathisfeet.

           “Dearpeople,goodChristians,saveme,helpme,dearfriends...helpus,somebody,”shemutteredbetweenhersobs.“Mygirl...Mydaughter!Myyoungestdaughterisleftbehind.She’sburned!Ooh!WasitforthisInursedyou....Ooh!”
