           SoonafterthatNatáshaheardhermother’sevenbreathing.Natáshadidnotmove,thoughherlittlebarefoot,thrustoutfromunderthequilt,wasgrowingcoldonthebarefloor.

           “Sónya,areyouasleep?Mamma?”shewhispered.

           Noonereplied.Natásharoseslowlyandcarefully,crossedherself,andsteppedcautiouslyonthecoldanddirtyfloorwithherslim,supple,barefeet.Theboardsofthefloorcreaked.Steppingcautiouslyfromonefoottotheothersheranlikeakittenthefewstepstothedoorandgraspedthecolddoorhandle.

           Sheopenedthedoorandsteppedacrossthethresholdandontothecold,dampearthenfloorofthepassage.Thecoldshefeltrefreshedher.Withherbarefeetshetouchedasleepingman,steppedoverhim,andopenedthedoorintothepartofthehutwherePrinceAndrewlay.Itwasdarkinthere.Inthefarthestcorner,onabenchbesideabedonwhichsomethingwaslying,stoodatallowcandlewithalong,thick,andsmolderingwick.

           FromthemomentshehadbeentoldthatmorningofPrinceAndrew’swoundandhispresencethere,Natáshahadresolvedtoseehim.
