           Allthewayshehadsatmotionlessinacornerofthecoachwithwideopeneyes,andtheexpressioninthemwhichthecountessknewsowellandfearedsomuch,andnowshesatinthesamewayonthebenchwhereshehadseatedherselfonarriving.Shewasplanningsomethingandeitherdecidingorhadalreadydecidedsomethinginhermind.Thecountessknewthis,butwhatitmightbeshedidnotknow,andthisalarmedandtormentedher.

           “Natásha,undress,darling;liedownonmybed.”

           Abedhadbeenmadeonabedsteadforthecountessonly.MadameSchossandthetwogirlsweretosleeponsomehayonthefloor.

           “No,Mamma,Iwillliedownhereonthefloor,”Natásharepliedirritablyandshewenttothewindowandopenedit.Throughtheopenwindowthemoansoftheadjutantcouldbeheardmoredistinctly.Sheputherheadoutintothedampnightair,andthecountesssawherslimneckshakingwithsobsandthrobbingagainstthewindowframe.NatáshaknewitwasnotPrinceAndrewwhowasmoaning.SheknewPrinceAndrewwasinthesameyardasthemselvesandinapartofthehutacrossthepassage;butthisdreadfulincessantmoaningmadehersob.ThecountessexchangedalookwithSónya.

           “Liedown,darling;liedown,mypet,”saidthecountess,softlytouchingNatásha’sshoulders.“Come,liedown.”

           “Oh,yes...I’llliedownatonce,”saidNatásha,andbeganhurriedlyundressing,tuggingatthetapesofherpetticoat.
