           Whenthetwentyminuteshadelapsedandthetimehadcomefortheoldprincetogetup,Tíkhoncametocalltheyoungprincetohisfather.Theoldmanmadeadeparturefromhisusualroutineinhonorofhisson’sarrival:hegaveorderstoadmithimtohisapartmentswhilehedressedfordinner.Theoldprincealwaysdressedinold-fashionedstyle,wearinganantiquecoatandpowderedhair;andwhenPrinceAndrewenteredhisfather’sdressingroom(notwiththecontemptuouslookandmannerheworeindrawingrooms,butwiththeanimatedfacewithwhichhetalkedtoPierre),theoldmanwassittingonalargeleather-coveredchair,wrappedinapowderingmantle,entrustinghisheadtoTíkhon.

           “Ah!here’sthewarrior!WantstovanquishBuonaparte?”saidtheoldman,shakinghispowderedheadasmuchasthetail,whichTíkhonwasholdingfasttoplait,wouldallow.

           “Youatleastmusttacklehimproperly,orelseifhegoesonlikethishe’llsoonhaveus,too,forhissubjects!Howareyou?”Andheheldouthischeek.

           Theoldmanwasinagoodtemperafterhisnapbeforedinner.(Heusedtosaythatanap“afterdinnerwassilver—beforedinner,golden.”)Hecasthappy,sidelongglancesathissonfromunderhisthick,bushyeyebrows.PrinceAndrewwentupandkissedhisfatheronthespotindicatedtohim.Hemadenoreplyonhisfather’sfavoritetopic—makingfunofthemilitarymenoftheday,andmoreparticularlyofBonaparte.
