           NoresidentswereleftinMoscow,andthesoldiers—likewaterpercolatingthroughsand—spreadirresistiblythroughthecityinalldirectionsfromtheKrémlinintowhichtheyhadfirstmarched.Thecavalry,onenteringamerchant’shousethathadbeenabandonedandfindingtherestablingmorethansufficientfortheirhorses,wenton,allthesame,tothenexthousewhichseemedtothembetter.Manyofthemappropriatedseveralhouses,chalkedtheirnamesonthem,andquarreledandevenfoughtwithothercompaniesforthem.Beforetheyhadhadtimetosecurequartersthesoldiersranoutintothestreetstoseethecityand,hearingthateverythinghadbeenabandoned,rushedtoplaceswherevaluablesweretobehadforthetaking.Theofficersfollowedtocheckthesoldiersandwereinvoluntarilydrawnintodoingthesame.InCarriageRowcarriageshadbeenleftintheshops,andgeneralsflockedtheretoselectcalèchesandcoachesforthemselves.Thefewinhabitantswhohadremainedinvitedcommandingofficerstotheirhouses,hopingtherebytosecurethemselvesfrombeingplundered.Thereweremassesofwealthandthereseemednoendtoit.AllaroundthequartersoccupiedbytheFrenchwereotherregionsstillunexploredandunoccupiedwhere,theythought,yetgreaterrichesmightbefound.AndMoscowengulfedthearmyeverdeeperanddeeper.Whenwaterisspilledondrygroundboththedrygroundandthewaterdisappearandmudresults;andinthesamewaytheentryofthefamishedarmyintotherichanddesertedcityresultedinfiresandlootingandthedestructionofboththearmyandthewealthycity.
