           Thecrimehadbegunandmustnowbecompleted.Theplaintivemoanofreproachwasdrownedbythethreateningandangryroarofthecrowd.Liketheseventhandlastwavethatshattersaship,thatlastirresistiblewaveburstfromtherearandreachedthefrontranks,carryingthemofftheirfeetandengulfingthemall.Thedragoonwasabouttorepeathisblow.Vereshcháginwithacryofhorror,coveringhisheadwithhishands,rushedtowardthecrowd.Thetallyouth,againstwhomhestumbled,seizedhisthinneckwithhishandsand,yellingwildly,fellwithhimunderthefeetofthepressing,strugglingcrowd.

           SomebeatandtoreatVereshchágin,othersatthetallyouth.Andthescreamsofthosethatwerebeingtrampledonandofthosewhotriedtorescuethetallladonlyincreasedthefuryofthecrowd.Itwasalongtimebeforethedragoonscouldextricatethebleedingyouth,beatenalmosttodeath.Andforalongtime,despitethefeverishhastewithwhichthemobtriedtoendtheworkthathadbeenbegun,thosewhowerehitting,throttling,andtearingatVereshcháginwereunabletokillhim,forthecrowdpressedfromallsides,swayingasonemasswiththeminthecenterandrenderingitimpossibleforthemeithertokillhimorlethimgo.

           “Hithimwithanax,eh!...Crushed?...Traitor,hesoldChrist....Stillalive...tenacious...serveshimright!Tortureservesathiefright.Usethehatchet!...What—stillalive?”

           Onlywhenthevictimceasedtostruggleandhiscrieschangedtoalong-drawn,measureddeathrattledidthecrowdaroundhisprostrate,bleedingcorpsebeginrapidlytochangeplaces.
