           Asoftenhappenswithpassionatepeople,hewasmasteredbyangerbutwasstillseekinganobjectonwhichtoventit.“Hereisthatmob,thedregsofthepeople,”hethoughtashegazedatthecrowd:“thisrabbletheyhaverousedbytheirfolly!Theywantavictim,”hethoughtashelookedatthetallladflourishinghisarm.Andthisthoughtoccurredtohimjustbecausehehimselfdesiredavictim,somethingonwhichtoventhisrage.

           “Isthecarriageready?”heaskedagain.

           “Yes,yourexcellency.WhatareyourordersaboutVereshchágin?Heiswaitingattheporch,”saidtheadjutant.

           “Ah!”exclaimedRostopchín,asifstruckbyanunexpectedrecollection.

           Andrapidlyopeningthedoorhewentresolutelyoutontothebalcony.Thetalkinginstantlyceased,hatsandcapsweredoffed,andalleyeswereraisedtothecount.

           “Goodmorning,lads!”saidthecountbrisklyandloudly.“Thankyouforcoming.I’llcomeouttoyouinamoment,butwemustfirstsettlewiththevillain.WemustpunishthevillainwhohascausedtheruinofMoscow.Waitforme!”

           Andthecountsteppedasbrisklybackintotheroomandslammedthedoorbehindhim.

           Amurmurofapprobationandsatisfactionranthroughthecrowd.“He’llsettlewithallthevillains,you’llsee!AndyousaidtheFrench...He’llshowyouwhatlawis!”themobweresayingasifreprovingoneanotherfortheirlackofconfidence.

           Afewminuteslateranofficercamehurriedlyoutofthefrontdoor,gaveanorder,andthedragoonsformedupinline.Thecrowdmovedeagerlyfromthebalconytowardtheporch.
