           Theinhabitantsleftagainsthiswishes.Ifthegovernmentofficeswereremoved,thiswasonlydoneonthedemandofofficialstowhomthecountyieldedreluctantly.Hewasabsorbedintherolehehadcreatedforhimself.Asisoftenthecasewiththosegiftedwithanardentimagination,thoughhehadlongknownthatMoscowwouldbeabandonedheknewitonlywithhisintellect,hedidnotbelieveitinhisheartanddidnotadapthimselfmentallytothisnewpositionofaffairs.

           Allhispainstakingandenergeticactivity(inhowfaritwasusefulandhadanyeffectonthepeopleisanotherquestion)hadbeensimplydirectedtowardarousinginthemasseshisownfeelingofpatriotichatredoftheFrench.
