           “Pleasecomeinhere.Themastersaregoingawayandthewholehousewillbeempty,”saidtheoldwomantotheoldattendant.

           “Well,perhaps,”saidhewithasigh.“Wedon’texpecttogethimhomealive!WehaveahouseofourowninMoscow,butit’salongwayfromhere,andthere’snobodylivinginit.”

           “Dousthehonortocomein,there’splentyofeverythinginthemaster’shouse.Comein,”saidMávraKuzmínichna.“Isheveryill?”sheasked.

           Theoldservantreturnedtothecalèche,lookedintoit,shookhisheaddisconsolately,toldthedrivertoturnintotheyard,andstoppedbesideMávraKuzmínichna.

           “O,LordJesusChrist!”shemurmured.

           Sheinvitedthemtotakethewoundedmanintothehouse.

           “Themasterswon’tobject...”shesaid.

           Buttheyhadtoavoidcarryingthemanupstairs,andsotheytookhimintothewingandputhimintheroomthathadbeenMadameSchoss’.
