           Thelargetablecoveredwithbooksandplans,thetallglass-frontedbookcaseswithkeysinthelocks,thehighdeskforwritingwhilestandingup,onwhichlayanopenexercisebook,andthelathewithtoolslaidreadytohandandshavingsscatteredaround—allindicatedcontinuous,varied,andorderlyactivity.ThemotionofthesmallfootshodinaTartarbootembroideredwithsilver,andthefirmpressureoftheleansinewyhand,showedthattheprincestillpossessedthetenaciousenduranceandvigorofhardyoldage.Afterafewmoreturnsofthelatheheremovedhisfootfromthepedal,wipedhischisel,droppeditintoaleatherpouchattachedtothelathe,and,approachingthetable,summonedhisdaughter.Henevergavehischildrenablessing,sohesimplyheldouthisbristlycheek(asyetunshaven)and,regardinghertenderlyandattentively,saidseverely:

           “Quitewell?Allrightthen,sitdown.”Hetooktheexercisebookcontaininglessonsingeometrywrittenbyhimselfanddrewupachairwithhisfoot.

           “Fortomorrow!”saidhe,quicklyfindingthepageandmakingascratchfromoneparagraphtoanotherwithhishardnail.

           Theprincessbentovertheexercisebookonthetable.

           “Waitabit,here’saletterforyou,”saidtheoldmansuddenly,takingaletteraddressedinawoman’shandfromabaghangingabovethetable,ontowhichhethrewit.

           Atthesightoftheletterredpatchesshowedthemselvesontheprincess’face.Shetookitquicklyandbentherheadoverit.

           “FromHéloïse?”askedtheprincewithacoldsmilethatshowedhisstillsound,yellowishteeth.
