           Theprincesssmiled.Sherosewiththesameunchangingsmilewithwhichshehadfirstenteredtheroom—thesmileofaperfectlybeautifulwoman.Withaslightrustleofherwhitedresstrimmedwithmossandivy,withagleamofwhiteshoulders,glossyhair,andsparklingdiamonds,shepassedbetweenthemenwhomadewayforher,notlookingatanyofthembutsmilingonall,asifgraciouslyallowingeachtheprivilegeofadmiringherbeautifulfigureandshapelyshoulders,back,andbosom—whichinthefashionofthosedayswereverymuchexposed—andsheseemedtobringtheglamourofaballroomwithherasshemovedtowardAnnaPávlovna.Hélènewassolovelythatnotonlydidshenotshowanytraceofcoquetry,butonthecontrarysheevenappearedshyofherunquestionableandalltoovictoriousbeauty.Sheseemedtowish,buttobeunable,todiminishitseffect.
