           Inthemidstofthisconversation,whichwasbeginningtointerestNapoleon,Berthier’seyesturnedtolookatageneralwithasuite,whowasgallopingtowardtheknollonalatheringhorse.ItwasBelliard.HavingdismountedhewentuptotheEmperorwithrapidstridesandinaloudvoicebeganboldlydemonstratingthenecessityofsendingreinforcements.HesworeonhishonorthattheRussianswerelostiftheEmperorwouldgiveanotherdivision.

           Napoleonshruggedhisshouldersandcontinuedtopaceupanddownwithoutreplying.Belliardbegantalkingloudlyandeagerlytothegeneralsofthesuitearoundhim.

           “Youareveryfiery,Belliard,”saidNapoleon,whenheagaincameuptothegeneral.“Intheheatofabattleitiseasytomakeamistake.Goandhaveanotherlookandthencomebacktome.”

           BeforeBelliardwasoutofsight,amessengerfromanotherpartofthebattlefieldgallopedup.
