           Ageneralwithhissuitecametothebattery,andafterspeakingtothecolonelgavePierreanangrylookandwentawayagainhavingorderedtheinfantrysupportsbehindthebatterytoliedown,soastobelessexposedtofire.Afterthisfromamidtheranksofinfantrytotherightofthebatterycamethesoundofadrumandshoutsofcommand,andfromthebatteryonesawhowthoseranksofinfantrymovedforward.

           Pierrelookedoverthewallofthetrenchandwasparticularlystruckbyapaleyoungofficerwho,lettinghisswordhangdown,waswalkingbackwardsandkeptglancinguneasilyaround.
