           Borísbelongedtothelatterandnooneelse,whileshowingservilerespecttoKutúzov,couldsocreateanimpressionthattheoldfellowwasnotmuchgoodandthatBennigsenmanagedeverything.NowthedecisivemomentofbattlehadcomewhenKutúzovwouldbedestroyedandthepowerpasstoBennigsen,orevenifKutúzovwonthebattleitwouldbefeltthateverythingwasdonebyBennigsen.Inanycasemanygreatrewardswouldhavetobegivenfortomorrow’saction,andnewmenwouldcometothefront.SoBoríswasfullofnervousvivacityallday.

           AfterKaysárov,otherswhomPierreknewcameuptohim,andhehadnottimetoreplytoallthequestionsaboutMoscowthatwereshowereduponhim,ortolistentoallthatwastoldhim.Thefacesallexpressedanimationandapprehension,butitseemedtoPierrethatthecauseoftheexcitementshowninsomeofthesefaceslaychieflyinquestionsofpersonalsuccess;hismind,however,wasoccupiedbythedifferentexpressionhesawonotherfaces—anexpressionthatspokenotofpersonalmattersbutoftheuniversalquestionsoflifeanddeath.KutúzovnoticedPierre’sfigureandthegroupgatheredroundhim.

           “Callhimtome,”saidKutúzov.

           AnadjutanttoldPierreofhisSereneHighness’wish,andPierrewenttowardKutúzov’sbench.Butamilitiamangottherebeforehim.ItwasDólokhov.

           “Howdidthatfellowgethere?”askedPierre.

           “He’sacreaturethatwrigglesinanywhere!”wastheanswer.“Hehasbeendegraded,youknow.Nowhewantstobobupagain.
