           Pierrepaidnomoreattentiontothisoccurrencethantotherestofwhatwenton,havingmadeuphismindonceforallthatwhathesawhappeningaroundhimthateveningwasinsomewayessential.

           Thechantingoftheserviceceased,andthevoiceofthepriestwasheardrespectfullycongratulatingthedyingmanonhavingreceivedthesacrament.Thedyingmanlayaslifelessandimmovableasbefore.Aroundhimeveryonebegantostir:stepswereaudibleandwhispers,amongwhichAnnaMikháylovna’swasthemostdistinct.

           Asthebearers,amongwhomwasAnnaMikháylovna,passedtheyoungmanhecaughtamomentaryglimpsebetweentheirheadsandbacksofthedyingman’shigh,stout,uncoveredchestandpowerfulshoulders,raisedbythosewhowereholdinghimunderthearmpits,andofhisgray,curly,leoninehead.
