           “IfPrinceAndrewheardthatIwasinthepoweroftheFrench!ThatI,thedaughterofPrinceNicholasBolkónski,askedGeneralRameauforprotectionandacceptedhisfavor!”Thisideahorrifiedher,madehershudder,blush,andfeelsucharushofangerandprideasshehadneverexperiencedbefore.Allthatwasdistressing,andespeciallyallthatwashumiliating,inherpositionrosevividlytohermind.“They,theFrench,wouldsettleinthishouse:M.leGénéralRameauwouldoccupyPrinceAndrew’sstudyandamusehimselfbylookingthroughandreadinghislettersandpapers.MademoiselleBouriennewoulddothehonorsofBoguchárovoforhim.Ishouldbegivenasmallroomasafavor,thesoldierswouldviolatemyfather’snewlyduggravetostealhiscrossesandstars,theywouldtellmeoftheirvictoriesovertheRussians,andwouldpretendtosympathizewithmysorrow...”thoughtPrincessMary,notthinkingherownthoughtsbutfeelingboundtothinklikeherfatherandherbrother.
