           “Youbrute,youmurderer!”screamedathin,palewomanwho,withababyinherarmsandherkerchieftornfromherhead,burstthroughthedooratthatmomentanddownthestepsintotheyard.

           Ferapóntovcameoutafterher,butonseeingAlpátychadjustedhiswaistcoat,smoothedhishair,yawned,andfollowedAlpátychintotheoppositeroom.

           “Goingalready?”saidhe.

           Alpátych,withoutansweringorlookingathishost,sortedhispackagesandaskedhowmuchheowed.

           “We’llreckonup!Well,haveyoubeentotheGovernor’s?”askedFerapóntov.“Whathasbeendecided?”

           AlpátychrepliedthattheGovernorhadnottoldhimanythingdefinite.

           “Withourbusiness,howcanwegetaway?”saidFerapóntov.“We’dhavetopaysevenrublesacartloadtoDorogobúzhandItellthemthey’renotChristianstoaskit!Selivánov,now,didagoodstrokelastThursday—soldflourtothearmyatninerublesasack.Willyouhavesometea?”headded.

           WhilethehorseswerebeingharnessedAlpátychandFerapóntovovertheirteatalkedofthepriceofcorn,thecrops,andthegoodweatherforharvesting.

           “Well,itseemstobegettingquieter,”remarkedFerapóntov,finishinghisthirdcupofteaandgettingup.“Oursmusthavegotthebestofit.Theorderswerenottoletthemin.Sowe’reinforce,itseems....TheysaytheotherdayMatthewIványchPlátovdrovethemintotheriverMárinaanddrownedsomeeighteenthousandinoneday.”

           Alpátychcollectedhisparcels,handedthemtothecoachmanwhohadcomein,andsettledupwiththeinnkeeper.
