           Thefeelingofpainandfearhehadexperiencedwhenhewasbeingcrushed,togetherwiththatofrapture,stillfurtherintensifiedhissenseoftheimportanceoftheoccasion.

           Suddenlythesoundofafiringofcannonwasheardfromtheembankment,tocelebratethesigningofpeacewiththeTurks,andthecrowdrushedimpetuouslytowardtheembankmenttowatchthefiring.Pétyatoowouldhaverunthere,buttheclerkwhohadtakentheyounggentlemanunderhisprotectionstoppedhim.Thefiringwasstillproceedingwhenofficers,generals,andgentlemen-in-waitingcamerunningoutofthecathedral,andafterthemothersinamoreleisurelymanner:capswereagainraised,andthosewhohadruntolookatthecannonranbackagain.Atlastfourmeninuniformsandsashesemergedfromthecathedraldoors.“Hurrah!hurrah!”shoutedthecrowdagain.

           “Whichishe?Which?”askedPétyainatearfulvoice,ofthosearoundhim,butnooneansweredhim,everybodywastooexcited;andPétya,fixingononeofthosefourmen,whomhecouldnotclearlyseeforthetearsofjoythatfilledhiseyes,concentratedallhisenthusiasmonhim—thoughithappenednottobetheEmperor—franticallyshouted“Hurrah!”andresolvedthattomorrow,comewhatmight,hewouldjointhearmy.

           ThecrowdranaftertheEmperor,followedhimtothepalace,andbegantodisperse.
