           “Iwantnothing,wishfornothing;teachmewhattodoandhowtousemywill!Takeme,takeme!”prayedNatásha,withimpatientemotioninherheart,notcrossingherselfbutlettingherslenderarmshangdownasifexpectingsomeinvisiblepoweratanymomenttotakeheranddeliverherfromherself,fromherregrets,desires,remorse,hopes,andsins.

           Thecountesslookedroundseveraltimesatherdaughter’ssoftenedfaceandshiningeyesandprayedGodtohelpher.

           Unexpectedly,inthemiddleoftheservice,andnotintheusualorderNatáshaknewsowell,thedeaconbroughtoutasmallstool,theonehekneltonwhenprayingonTrinitySunday,andplaceditbeforethedoorsofthesanctuaryscreen.Thepriestcameoutwithhispurplevelvetbirettaonhishead,adjustedhishair,andkneltdownwithaneffort.Everybodyfollowedhisexampleandtheylookedatoneanotherinsurprise.ThencametheprayerjustreceivedfromtheSynod—aprayerforthedeliveranceofRussiafromhostileinvasion.

           “LordGodofmight,Godofoursalvation!”beganthepriestinthatvoice,clear,notgrandiloquentbutmild,inwhichonlytheSlavclergyreadandwhichactssoirresistiblyonaRussianheart.
