           ThetwoPávlogradsquadronswerebivouackingonafieldofrye,whichwasalreadyinearbuthadbeencompletelytroddendownbycattleandhorses.Therainwasdescendingintorrents,andRostóv,withayoungofficernamedIlyín,hisprotégé,wassittinginahastilyconstructedshelter.Anofficeroftheirregiment,withlongmustachesextendingontohischeeks,whoafterridingtothestaffhadbeenovertakenbytherain,enteredRostóv’sshelter.

           “Ihavecomefromthestaff,Count.HaveyouheardofRaévski’sexploit?”
