           Pfuelwasevidentlyofthatsort.Hehadascience—thetheoryofobliquemovementsdeducedbyhimfromthehistoryofFredericktheGreat’swars,andallhecameacrossinthehistoryofmorerecentwarfareseemedtohimabsurdandbarbarous—monstrouscollisionsinwhichsomanyblunderswerecommittedbybothsidesthatthesewarscouldnotbecalledwars,theydidnotaccordwiththetheory,andthereforecouldnotserveasmaterialforscience.

           In1806Pfuelhadbeenoneofthoseresponsible,fortheplanofcampaignthatendedinJenaandAuerstädt,buthedidnotseetheleastproofofthefallibilityofhistheoryinthedisastersofthatwar.Onthecontrary,thedeviationsmadefromhistheorywere,inhisopinion,thesolecauseofthewholedisaster,andwithcharacteristicallygleefulsarcasmhewouldremark,“There,Isaidthewholeaffairwouldgotothedevil!”Pfuelwasoneofthosetheoreticianswhosolovetheirtheorythattheylosesightofthetheory’sobject—itspracticalapplication.Hisloveoftheorymadehimhateeverythingpractical,andhewouldnotlistentoit.Hewasevenpleasedbyfailures,forfailuresresultingfromdeviationsinpracticefromthetheoryonlyprovedtohimtheaccuracyofhistheory.
