           Duringthefirstfourdays,whilenodutieswererequiredofhim,PrinceAndrewroderoundthewholefortifiedcampand,bytheaidofhisownknowledgeandbytalkswithexperts,triedtoformadefiniteopinionaboutit.Butthequestionwhetherthecampwasadvantageousordisadvantageousremainedforhimundecided.AlreadyfromhismilitaryexperienceandwhathehadseenintheAustriancampaign,hehadcometotheconclusionthatinwarthemostdeeplyconsideredplanshavenosignificanceandthatalldependsonthewayunexpectedmovementsoftheenemy—thatcannotbeforeseen—aremet,andonhowandbywhomthewholematterishandled.Toclearupthislastpointforhimself,PrinceAndrew,utilizinghispositionandacquaintances,triedtofathomthecharacterofthecontrolofthearmyandofthemenandpartiesengagedinit,andhededucedforhimselfthefollowingofthestateofaffairs.

           WhiletheEmperorhadstillbeenatVílna,theforceshadbeendividedintothreearmies.First,thearmyunderBarclaydeTolly,secondly,thearmyunderBagratión,andthirdly,theonecommandedbyTormásov.TheEmperorwaswiththefirstarmy,butnotascommanderinchief.Intheordersissueditwasstated,notthattheEmperorwouldtakecommand,butonlythathewouldbewiththearmy.TheEmperor,moreover,hadwithhimnotacommanderinchief’sstaffbuttheimperialheadquartersstaff.Inattendanceonhimwastheheadoftheimperialstaff,QuartermasterGeneralPrinceVolkónski,aswellasgenerals,imperialaides-de-camp,diplomaticofficials,andalargenumberofforeigners,butnotthearmystaff.
