           Hehadnotfinishedthelastversebeforetheyoungpeoplebegantogetreadytodanceinthelargehall,andthesoundofthefeetandthecoughingofthemusicianswereheardfromthegallery.

           PierrewassittinginthedrawingroomwhereShinshínhadengagedhim,asamanrecentlyreturnedfromabroad,inapoliticalconversationinwhichseveralothersjoinedbutwhichboredPierre.WhenthemusicbeganNatáshacameinandwalkingstraightuptoPierresaid,laughingandblushing:

           “Mammatoldmetoaskyoutojointhedancers.”

           “Iamafraidofmixingthefigures,”Pierrereplied;“butifyouwillbemyteacher...”Andloweringhisbigarmheofferedittotheslenderlittlegirl.

           Whilethecoupleswerearrangingthemselvesandthemusicianstuningup,Pierresatdownwithhislittlepartner.Natáshawasperfectlyhappy;shewasdancingwithagrown-upman,whohadbeenabroad.Shewassittinginaconspicuousplaceandtalkingtohimlikeagrown-uplady.Shehadafaninherhandthatoneoftheladieshadgivenhertohold.Assumingquitetheposeofasocietywoman(heavenknowswhenandwhereshehadlearnedit)shetalkedwithherpartner,fanningherselfandsmilingoverthefan.

           “Dear,dear!Justlookather!”exclaimedthecountessasshecrossedtheballroom,pointingtoNatásha.

           Natáshablushedandlaughed.
