           TheyrodethroughthevillageofRykónty,pasttetheredFrenchhussarhorses,pastsentinelsandmenwhosalutedtheircolonelandstaredwithcuriosityataRussianuniform,andcameoutattheotherendofthevillage.ThecolonelsaidthatthecommanderofthedivisionwasamileandaquarterawayandwouldreceiveBalashëvandconducthimtohisdestination.

           Thesunhadbynowrisenandshonegailyonthebrightverdure.

           Theyhadhardlyriddenupahill,pastatavern,beforetheysawagroupofhorsemencomingtowardthem.Infrontofthegroup,onablackhorsewithtrappingsthatglitteredinthesun,rodeatallmanwithplumesinhishatandblackhaircurlingdowntohisshoulders.Heworearedmantle,andstretchedhislonglegsforwardinFrenchfashion.ThismanrodetowardBalashëvatagallop,hisplumesflowingandhisgemsandgoldlaceglitteringinthebrightJunesunshine.

           Balashëvwasonlytwohorses’lengthfromtheequestrianwiththebracelets,plumes,necklaces,andgoldembroidery,whowasgallopingtowardhimwithatheatricallysolemncountenance,whenJulner,theFrenchcolonel,whisperedrespectfully:“TheKingofNaples!”Itwas,infact,Murat,nowcalled“KingofNaples.”ThoughitwasquiteincomprehensiblewhyheshouldbeKingofNaples,hewascalledso,andwashimselfconvincedthathewasso,andthereforeassumedamoresolemnandimportantairthanformerly.
