           Hélènehaddisappearedleavingthemalone,andAnatolehadtakenherhandandsaidinatendervoice:

           “IcannotcometovisityoubutisitpossiblethatIshallneverseeyou?Iloveyoumadly.CanInever...?”and,blockingherpath,hebroughthisfaceclosetohers.

           Hislarge,glittering,masculineeyesweresoclosetohersthatshesawnothingbutthem.

           “Natalie?”hewhisperedinquiringlywhileshefeltherhandsbeingpainfullypressed.“Natalie?”

           “Idon’tunderstand.Ihavenothingtosay,”hereyesreplied.

           Burninglipswerepressedtohers,andatthesameinstantshefeltherselfreleased,andHélène’sfootstepsandtherustleofherdresswereheardintheroom.Natáshalookedroundather,andthen,redandtrembling,threwafrightenedlookofinquiryatAnatoleandmovedtowardthedoor.

           “Oneword,justone,forGod’ssake!”criedAnatole.

           HélènereturnedwithNatáshatothedrawingroom.TheRostóvswentawaywithoutstayingforsupper.
