           Berg,obliviousofironyorindifference,continuedtoexplainhowbyexchangingintotheGuardshehadalreadygainedasteponhisoldcomradesoftheCadetCorps;howinwartimethecompanycommandermightgetkilledandhe,asseniorinthecompany,mighteasilysucceedtothepost;howpopularhewaswitheveryoneintheregiment,andhowsatisfiedhisfatherwaswithhim.Bergevidentlyenjoyednarratingallthis,anddidnotseemtosuspectthatothers,too,mighthavetheirowninterests.Butallhesaidwassoprettilysedate,andthenaïvetéofhisyouthfulegotismwassoobvious,thathedisarmedhishearers.
