           StepanArkadyevitchwasonfamiliartermswithalmostallhisacquaintances,andcalledalmostallofthembytheirChristiannames:oldmenofsixty,boysoftwenty,actors,ministers,merchants,andadjutant-generals,sothatmanyofhisintimatechumsweretobefoundattheextremeendsofthesocialladder,andwouldhavebeenverymuchsurprisedtolearnthattheyhad,throughthemediumofOblonsky,somethingincommon.Hewasthefamiliarfriendofeveryonewithwhomhetookaglassofchampagne,andhetookaglassofchampagnewitheveryone,andwheninconsequencehemetanyofhisdisreputablechums,asheusedinjoketocallmanyofhisfriends,inthepresenceofhissubordinates,hewellknewhow,withhischaracteristictact,todiminishthedisagreeableimpressionmadeonthem.Levinwasnotadisreputablechum,butOblonsky,withhisreadytact,feltthatLevinfanciedhemightnotcaretoshowhisintimacywithhimbeforehissubordinates,andsohemadehastetotakehimoffintohisroom.

           LevinwasalmostofthesameageasOblonsky;theirintimacydidnotrestmerelyonchampagne.Levinhadbeenthefriendandcompanionofhisearlyyouth.Theywerefondofoneanotherinspiteofthedifferenceoftheircharactersandtastes,asfriendsarefondofoneanotherwhohavebeentogetherinearlyyouth.Butinspiteofthis,eachofthemasisoftenthewaywithmenwhohaveselectedcareersofdifferentkindsthoughindiscussionhewouldevenjustifytheother’scareer,inhisheartdespisedit.
